Overview

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic disease caused by the destruction and degeneration of cartilage in joints, leading to joint stiffness and pain. The disease commonly occurs in the spine, hips, knees, finger joints, and joints at the base of the thumb and big toe. OA is usually age-related, and for most people with OA, joint cartilage becomes damaged through repeated wear and tear - a lifetime of working in a kneeling position, for example. OA can range from very mild to very severe. Nearly 21 million Americans are affected by OA.
Prognosis
There is no known cure for osteoarthritis. Treatment focuses on decreasing pain, slowing the rate of degeneration, and maintaining strength and mobility. Taking care of yourself by exercising, taking your medications, seeing the doctor regularly and eating right can help you feel better.
