Causes

A major cause for osteoporosis is a continued lack of calcium for many years. Your body cannot make it. Also, a lack of vitamin D can contribute to the disease. Not getting enough weight-bearing exercise such as walking or running might also lead to osteoporosis.
Menopause can quicken the rate of bone loss because of the loss of estrogen. Low testosterone levels in men have the same effect. Other factors associated with getting osteoporosis include smoking, excessive alcohol use, having a family history, being thin and/or having a small frame. Conditions such as anorexia nervosa can lead to osteoporosis. Medications including corticosteroids, chemotherapy drugs and anticonvulsant drugs can also contribute to the condition.
