Lab Tests

To diagnose osteoporosis, your doctor may order certain blood and urine tests, to rule out other diseases that could cause bone loss. Your doctor may also order tests of your parathyroid gland, thyroid gland, kidneys or lungs to see if you have a condition that could worsen your osteoporosis. Blood levels of vitamin D and ionized calcium might also be examined.
