Self-Care Strategies After You Are Diagnosed

Follow your doctor's recommendations carefully with respect to diet and exercise. Do your best to reduce any risk factors that you may have because of unhealthy lifestyle habits. For example, to preserve your bones as well as your lungs, stop smoking. If you choose to drink alcohol, do so only in moderation.

If you are taking medication or supplements for the treatment of osteoporosis, make sure you understand the risks and benefits of each medication or supplement you are taking. You also should understand how each drug or supplement is meant to be taken and carefully follow any guidelines you are given.

If you have advanced osteoporosis or are a caregiver for someone who does, look for ways to reduce the risk of falls. Even minor falls can lead to bone fractures and associated problems in people with weakened bones. Remove throw rugs and other objects in the home that could lead to tripping and falling. If you are taking medication that makes you dizzy or drowsy, ask your doctor if your medications can be changed to avoid this side effect.
