Symptoms

The first sign of bladder cancer is usually painless, microscopic "hematuria" or blood in the urine. In such cases, cancer is detected by a routine urine test (urinalysis). In other cases, blood is noticeable when the urine appears reddish or darker than normal. However, a bladder infection, prostatitis and kidney stones can also cause blood to enter the urine, so a doctor has to consider those before making a diagnosis of bladder cancer. They all may have the following symptoms:

  • Pain or burning on urination
  • Blood in the urine
  • Pain in the side, lower back or lower abdomen
  • Frequent urination
  • Slowing of urinary stream
