Breast Self-Exam Checklist

Be familiar with normal appearance of your breasts.

Look for swelling, puckering, dimpling, redness, and nipple discharge.

Feel for unusual lumps, soreness, change from normal consistency.

When to See the Doctor

  • Talk to your doctor about the best time to begin preventive screening. The American Cancer Society recommends clinical breast exams every three years from age 20 through 39, and then yearly at age 40.
  • See your doctor if you find a suspicious lump or any change in the breast. Do not wait. Remember that breast cancer can be cured if it is treated early enough.
