Symptoms

About 90 percent of those who are diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma first see their doctor for chest pain or shortness of breath.

  • Shortness of breath. Shortness of breath is often due to a malignant pleural effusion, or a collection of fluid around the lungs that contains cancer cells.
  • Chest pain. Chest pain is often caused by invasion of mesothelioma into nearby ribs.
  • Pain or swelling in the abdomen. About 20 percent of malignant mesotheliomas begin in the abdominal lining and cause abdominal pain and swelling.

Other common symptoms include:

  • Cough
  • Fatigue
  • Unexplained weight loss
