Questions to Ask the Doctor

When you are diagnosed with cancer, you will likely have many thoughts going through your mind at the same time. Be sure to take a notepad and pen to write down what your doctor tells you and/or bring a tape recorder to tape your discussions. You may also want to have a friend or family member accompany you to your doctor visit.
Be sure to ask your doctor...
- To tell you what type of cancer you have
- To describe the tests necessary for staging
- To describe treatment options, including experimental treatments (clinical trials)
- About side effects of different treatments
- To tell you about surgical procedures
- About preserving fertility
- How long you will need to be hospitalized
- To tell you the chances of the cancer returning
