Questions to Ask the Doctor

When you are diagnosed with cancer, you will likely have many thoughts going through your mind at the same time. Be sure to take a notepad and pen to write down what your doctor tells you and/or bring a tape recorder to tape your discussions. You may also want to have a friend or family member accompany you to your doctor visit.

Be sure to ask your doctor...

  • To tell you what type of cancer you have
  • To describe the tests necessary for staging
  • To describe treatment options, including experimental treatments (clinical trials)
  • About side effects of different treatments
  • To tell you about surgical procedures
  • About preserving fertility
  • How long you will need to be hospitalized
  • To tell you the chances of the cancer returning
