What Is a Gynecologic Oncologist?

Gynecologic oncologists treat women with cancer of the reproductive organs. They are recognized by the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology as cancer surgeons as well as oncologists. They are trained in the methods of cancer diagnosis and treatments, including surgical procedures for all the gynecologic cancers, and in chemotherapy protocols.
After diagnosing ovarian cancer and surgically removing the tumor, a gynecologic oncologist reviews the pathology results and decides on additional treatment, including chemotherapy. If indicated, the same oncologist is qualified to administer chemotherapy treatments. In this fashion, a woman with ovarian cancer is provided with continuity of care from a single doctor.
