|
|
By Laurie Sammeth, HealthAtoZ Writer
Urologic surgeons are also called urologists. These doctors work to maintain the health - and treat any problems - of the urinary tract. They have specialized training in problems of the organs of the urinary tract (including the bladder and kidneys) in both men and women. Urologists also treat problems of the male reproductive organs. This includes the penis, prostate and testicles.
Among the procedures a urologic surgeon performs are:
- Medical evaluation and treatment of such conditions as:
- Urinary tract infections
- Prostate infections
- Male infertility
- Kidney stones
- Female pelvic floor disorders
- Screening, diagnosing and staging of prostate cancer (which may involve digital rectal examination, biopsy or surgery)
- Surgical removal of pelvic lymph nodes and urological tumors, including those in the kidney, prostate and bladder
- Surgical repair and reconstruction of the genitals (when necessary because of trauma, cancer or birth defects)
- Surgery for certain types of incontinence
- Helping restore sexual functioning in men with impotence (erectile dysfunction)
