Common Risk Factors

  • Exposure to radiation.
  • Family history of thyroid cancer.
  • Family history of multiple endocrine neoplasia syndromes. These are hormone-secreting tumors that may have caused chronic constipation, diarrhea, low blood sugar, nervousness or high blood pressure.
  • Sex. Thyroid cancer is two to three times more common in women than men.
  • Age. Papillary and follicular thyroid cancer are most common in young adults. Anaplastic thyroid cancer is more likely in older people.
