When to see the doctor

Because high blood pressure doesn't have symptoms, you won't be able to tell on your own if you may have it. That's why it's a good idea to see your doctor regularly, particularly if you have risk factors for high blood pressure. Children as young as 6 can have their blood pressure checked, although this is usually not essential unless the child is obese.
If your blood pressure is normal, your doctor may advise you to get it checked at least every two years. If you have prehypertension or if you have a family history of high blood pressure, you're at higher risk. Check with your doctor to find out how often your blood pressure should be checked.
