Glossary of Terms for Digestive Diseases

  • Colon : The large bowel
  • Barium: A thick, white substance that X-rays cannot penetrate.
  • Endoscopy (-ies): Looking inside your body with a long, thin viewing instrument. In an upper endoscopy (EGD), the tube goes down your throat, while in a lower endoscopy (sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy), the tube goes up through the rectum. Endoscopies also allow your doctor to take tissue samples for a pathologist to examine.
  • Gastroscopy : Looking inside your stomach with a long, thin viewing instrument. A gastroscopy also allows your doctor to take tissue samples for a pathologist to examine.
  • Feces, fecal matter, stool: All terms for solid waste that passes with bowel movements.
