Types of Medication

Your physician may prescribe the following medications if you are diagnosed with peptic ulcer disease...
Antibiotics. A one- to two-week course of antibiotics to kill the H. pylori bacteria.
Acid blockers. Also called "H-2 blockers," these are medications that block the action of histamine on the cells that produce acid. Acid blockers are available over the counter as well as by prescription. They relieve ulcer-related pain and promote healing.
Antacids. These neutralize the acid in the stomach and provide rapid relief of ulcer-related pain. They are often used with an acid blocker.
Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). These shut down the biological "pump" that produces acid in the cells lining the stomach. They tend to be more effective than the acid blockers, but are more expensive. The PPI Prilosec® is available over the counter.
Cytoprotective agents. These are drugs that coat the stomach lining, protect it against acid secretion and promote healing.
