Treatment Plan

Antibiotics can kill the bacteria causing Lyme disease. Lyme disease caught in the early stages is easily cured with treatment - usually 10 to 14 days of Doxycycline or Amoxicillin. Be sure to follow your doctor's directions closely when taking your medication. Treatment should completely kill the bacteria and make sure they don't spread to the joints, nervous system or heart. Many people treated in the later stages of Lyme disease also respond well to antibiotics but require treatments of up to four weeks. Some people may have relapses and need more antibiotic treatment. If the disease progresses without treatment, permanent damage to the joints or the nervous system can develop.
