Risk Factors

West Nile virus is rare. Fewer than 1 percent of people who are bitten by a mosquito develop severe symptoms and few mosquitoes carry the infection. Your risk increases if you:
- Spend a lot of time outside.
- Are older than 50. You have a higher chance of getting sick than other people who develop symptoms.
- Live in or have traveled to areas where West Nile virus activity has been identified.
