Prevention

No one can predict who is more vulnerable or most at risk for the disease. If it is in the family, be alert to its signs and symptoms. This is key to getting early treatment for helping to control the course of the disease.
There is no way to prevent bipolar disorder from occurring, but once you know you have it, preventive treatment is strongly recommended. The best management of the disorder combines medication and psychosocial treatment.
In most cases, bipolar disorder is best controlled with continuous, rather than off and on, treatment. Even with continuous treatment, though, mood changes can occur and need to be reported immediately to your doctor. This can give your doctor a chance to adjust your treatment plan and prevent a full-blown episode.
