Risk Factors

Risk factors for depression include:

  • A family history.
  • Life stresses, good or bad.
  • Some types of medication, including arthritis, as well as certain medications for high blood pressure and heart problems.
  • Physical problems, such as cancer, heart attack, stroke and Parkinson's.
  • Poor self-esteem.
  • Being female. Women are twice as likely to become depressed as men.
