Risk Factors

Risk factors for depression include:
- A family history.
- Life stresses, good or bad.
- Some types of medication, including arthritis, as well as certain medications for high blood pressure and heart problems.
- Physical problems, such as cancer, heart attack, stroke and Parkinson's.
- Poor self-esteem.
- Being female. Women are twice as likely to become depressed as men.
