Risk Factors

Risk factors for eating disorders can include:
- Being female, although statistics are rising for males.
- Personality traits such as perfectionism, rigidity, all-or-nothing thinking and risk-avoiding.
- Dieting.
- Personal or family history of obesity, eating disorders, disordered eating habits and depression.
- Physical or sexual abuse, teasing and harassment.
- Participation in sports in which body shape and size are important.
- Significant and overwhelming stress.
- Youth. While eating disorders can start at any age, ages 11 and 17 have been identified as times for increased vulnerability.
