When to See the Doctor

Getting enough sleep is essential for your health and happiness. Insomnia affects mood and causes daytime sleepiness, irritability, lack of energy and difficulty concentrating. Insomnia can interfere with your daily activities, your relationships and your job performance. Also, being sleep-deprived makes you a safety risk on the road.
If your sleep problems last longer than a few weeks or are distressing to you, see a doctor. See your doctor if:
- You often have trouble falling asleep, staying asleep or waking too early.
- You awaken during the night gasping for breath.
- Your partner says your breathing stops at times during sleep.
- You snore loudly.
- You wake up feeling like you haven't been asleep.
- You fall asleep often during the day.
