Doctors measure obesity through a formula called the body mass index (BMI). If your BMI is 30 or higher, you are considered to be obese.

When to See the Doctor

Because of the many health problems caused by obesity, you should see a doctor to screen for conditions such as heart problems. The sooner you get them treated, the better. Diseases such as diabetes can ravage your body, leading to complications such as kidney and eye problems and heart disease. Untreated high blood pressure, which often has no symptoms, can lead to heart attack and stroke.
