When to See the Doctor

If you have had unprotected sex with someone and you aren't sure if that person has an STD, see a doctor for an exam and testing. Some diseases may be silent and not have noticeable symptoms, but may cause serious harm such as pelvic or generalized infections, infertility or liver damage. Also, HIV, which may not have symptoms, needs treatment right away.
Also see your doctor if you have any symptom that could be a sign of a sexually transmitted disease. Such symptoms include:
- Itchiness around the vagina and/or vaginal discharge
- Discharge from the penis
- Pain during sex or when urinating
- Pain in the pelvic area
- A sore throat following oral sex
- Pain in or around the anus following anal sex
- Chancre sores (painless red sores) on the genital area, anus, tongue or throat
- A scaly rash on the palms of your hands and the soles of your feet
- Dark urine or loose, light-colored stools
- Yellow eyes and skin
- Small blisters that turn into scabs on the genital area
- Swollen glands, fever and body aches
- Unusual infections or weight loss
- Unexplained fatigue or night sweats
- Soft, flesh-colored warts around the genital area
