When to See the Doctor

Some people with allergy problems such as a mild case of hay fever may not need to see a doctor. The occasional use of an over-the-counter medication may help them.

See a doctor if:

  • Your allergies interfere with your quality of life and day-to-day activities
  • You can't pinpoint the cause
  • Over-the-counter medications don't help
  • Your allergies are possibly life-threatening
  • You have asthma, or have signs of undiagnosed asthma such as struggling to catch your breath, wheezing or coughing, shortness of breath and tightness in your chest
  • Your nasal allergies cause chronic sinus infections, nasal congestion or trouble breathing
