Other Tests

Doctors don't do clinical tests for the common cold or the flu. However, if your doctor suspects a bacterial sinus infection is persistent or recurrent, an MRI or CT scan may be done.

If your doctor suspects pneumonia or other such conditions, chest x-rays, blood tests and sometimes bacterial cultures of mucus produced by coughing are used.
