Treatment Plan

The goal of therapy for colds is to treat the symptoms to minimize discomfort.

Ibuprofen (Motrin®) dosage chart

Medication may be given every six to eight hours, but should not be given more than four times in a 24-hour period.

  • 5 mL = 1 teaspoon (tsp)
  • Ibuprofen dosage: determine by finding your child's weight in the top row of the dosage table.
  • Adult dose: 400 mg
  • Repeat every 6 to 8 hours as needed
  • Don't give to children younger than 6 months of age.
  • For children under 6 years of age, it is strongly recommended to first call your physician before using any over the counter medication.

Acetaminophen (Tylenol®) dosage chart

  • Acetaminophen dose: determine by finding your child's weight in the top row of the dosage table.
  • Adult dose = 650 mg.
  • Repeat every 4 to 6 hours as needed.
  • Note: Acetaminophen also comes in 80, 120, 325 and 650 mg suppositories (the rectal dose is the same as the dosage given by mouth).
  • Don't give to children younger than 3 months of age.

Dosage to be administered every four hours.

Over 115 pounds-adult dose:

2 adult tablets every 4 hrs.
