Hospitalization by Your Doctor

Babies, young children and people older than 65 may need to be in the hospital if they have pneumonia. Other issues that may require a hospital stay include:
- Problems with the immune system
- Dehydration and vomiting so much that fluids and medicine can't be kept down
- Frequent bouts of pneumonia
- Worsening shortness of breath
- Skin is blue or pale
In the hospital, treatment may include antibiotics given intravenously and breathing therapy.
Acute bronchitis doesn't need a hospital stay. However, chronic bronchitis can be quite serious and even cause death. Many people neglect symptoms of chronic bronchitis until it has become very serious. By the time someone sees the doctor, the lungs have been seriously injured. This can increase the risk of a serious respiratory problem or heart failure.
