When to See the Doctor

Pneumonia
Call your doctor right away. Early diagnosis and treatment is important. If you have chest pain or trouble breathing or if your lips or fingers look blue, call the doctor or go to the hospital. Pneumonia can be treated, but it's an extremely serious illness. Don't wait.
Bronchitis
Most cases clear up on their own. But if you have a fever higher than 101 degrees F, trouble breathing, or are coughing up yellow or green mucus, call the doctor. You may have pneumonia. Also, if you have symptoms lasting for more than a month, see your doctor.
Don't ignore your symptoms if you have asthma, emphysema or congestive heart failure. That's because you are at higher risk for complications from bronchitis.
