Pneumonia and bronchitis
- If you were prescribed antibiotics, finish them. If you don't, bacteria can mutate and become resistant to the medicine.
- A humidifier, may help. It increases the moisture in the air and soothes irritated lungs.
- Drink water and other fluids, especially if you have a fever.
- Ask the doctor about over-the-counter drugs such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen. A cough suppressant may not let your lungs to clear the mucus.
- Rest. Give your body enough time to recover so you don't have a relapse.
- Eat a balanced diet, which can boost your recovery.
Chronic bronchitis
- See your doctor, especially if you have a cold or the flu.
- Don't smoke.
- Get vaccinated against the flu and pneumonia.
- Avoid respiratory irritants such as secondhand smoke, dust, and other air pollutants.
