Know the Warning Signs of Teen Substance Abuse

Teenagers who turn moody, spend a lot of time in their rooms, and lose interest in hobbies or sports are acting typical, right? True, but that kind of behavior can also be a sign that your child is using alcohol or other drugs. Watch for warning signals.

Some things may throw you off-guard because they are normal for teens who are developing their own identity and asserting independence from their parents. However, changes that are extreme or last for more than a few days are a danger sign. This requires attention. Your teen may be abusing alcohol or drugs. Here are some behaviors to watch for that may indicate possible substance abuse:

  • Evidence of drugs and drug paraphernalia, such as pipes, rolling papers, eye drops, butane lighters
  • Borrowing more money from parents or friends
  • Stealing
  • Abrupt changes in mood or attitude
  • Withdrawal, isolation, depression, fatigue
  • Sudden decline in attendance or performance at school or work
  • Sudden resistance to discipline at home or school
  • Unusual temper flare-ups
  • Loss of interest in hobbies and/or sports
  • Changes in eating or sleeping habits
  • Befriending a new group of people who use drugs
  • Heightened secrecy about actions or possessions
