Know the Warning Signs of Teen Substance Abuse
Teenagers who turn moody, spend a lot of time in their rooms, and lose interest in hobbies or sports are acting typical, right? True, but that kind of behavior can also be a sign that your child is using alcohol or other drugs. Watch for warning signals. Some things may throw you off-guard because they are normal for teens who are developing their own identity and asserting independence from their parents. However, changes that are extreme or last for more than a few days are a danger sign. This requires attention. Your teen may be abusing alcohol or drugs. Here are some behaviors to watch for that may indicate possible substance abuse: - Evidence of drugs and drug paraphernalia, such as pipes, rolling papers, eye drops, butane lighters
- Borrowing more money from parents or friends
- Abrupt changes in mood or attitude
- Withdrawal, isolation, depression, fatigue
- Sudden decline in attendance or performance at school or work
- Sudden resistance to discipline at home or school
- Loss of interest in hobbies and/or sports
- Changes in eating or sleeping habits
- Befriending a new group of people who use drugs
- Heightened secrecy about actions or possessions
