Questions to Ask the Doctor

Ask your doctor about:
- Whether it is abuse or addiction.
- How this problem developed.
- The signs of abuse and addiction.
- Withdrawal symptoms.
- Testing for drug use.
- The health problems and threats, including permanent effects.
- Treatment plan.
- Whether he/she recommends inpatient (staying overnight in a facility) treatment.
- What kind of treatment options are available.
- Referrals for support groups, treatment programs and therapists.
- Talking with school officials about the problem.
Make sure that you:
- Understand what is wrong.
- Know the signs of complications.
- Know what to do if you see these signs.
- Understand how the condition is to be treated.
- Understand dosages and complications of any medicines prescribed.
- Understand when to call your doctor.
- Understand when to be rechecked if necessary.
