When to See the Doctor

Knowing when to see the doctor depends on learning the warning signs. You know your child best. Many times there are signs that may indicate a problem. For instance, if you see unusual behavior, change in friends or change in interactions with friends and family or you are concerned, talk to your primary doctor or pediatrician. He or she can help determine if there is a problem and where to get help.

It may be hard confronting your teenager. But if you can, ask your teen the following questions:

  1. Do you use alcohol or drugs to relax, feel better about yourself or fit in?
  2. Do you use these substances when alone?
  3. Do you forget what you did while on the substance?
  4. Have you been told to cut down on your drinking or drug use?
  5. Have you gotten into trouble while on these substances?
  6. Have you been in a car driven by someone using drugs or alcohol? Or have you driven a car while under the influence?

If you need help finding a health care professional in your area, call the CSAT National Drug and Alcohol Treatment Routing Service at 1-800-662-4357.
