Risk Factors

Some kids want the novelty and excitement of taking drugs, something that flouts authority. Others use drugs because they are suffering and these drugs seem to make them feel better by taking away the pain. Such teens might include those with mental disorders such as depression, manic depression, panic disorders and other problems. These teens might have undiagnosed learning disorders such as attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Largely, these mental issues or learning disorders were never addressed or were not sufficiently treated. Other teens may use drugs to deal with an abusive family life.

Drug abuse affects all teens, regardless of economic status or race. Risk factors may include:

  • Poor self-esteem.
  • Poor relationships with family, including parents.
  • Low grades.
  • Hostile or defiant behavior.
  • Easily influenced by friends.
  • History of behavioral or emotional problems.
  • Untreated or undertreated learning disorders such as attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.
  • Drug use in the family.
