You're trying to cope emotionally. You're visiting specialists and weighing your treatment options. The last thing you need to worry about is getting to and from your cancer treatments.
To get state-of-the-art care, sometimes you have to travel out of town to a leading medical center. Sadly, not everyone with cancer can afford the trip.
The Corporate Angel Network
Enter the Corporate Angel Network. This group helps ease the burden of travel for those with cancer. The Network arranges free flights to recognized treatment centers around the country, using the empty seats on corporate jets. These seats are donated by 500 of America's top corporations.
Eligibility
You can use these services if you:
- Have cancer, are receiving a bone marrow transplant or are a bone marrow donor.
- Can walk without help and climb the steps to the aircraft.
- Are traveling to or from a cancer treatment center. The center must be recognized by the American College of Surgeons or the National Institutes of Health.
- Do not need oxygen, an IV or any other form of life support during the flight.
Eligibility is not based on financial need. You can travel as often as you need to.
Benefits
Corporate Angel flights not only save you money, but also help you avoid the crowds and lines at airports. And you don't have to travel alone. Adults can bring along one adult companion and children can travel with two adults.
Planning a trip
For free air transportation, call the Corporate Angel Network's toll-free patient line at (866) 328-1313. Or, e-mail them at info@corpangelnetwork.org. Register with the network within three weeks of your appointment with an approved cancer center.
Flights can't be guaranteed, so be sure to make backup plans. As soon as a match can be found, a Corporate Angel Network volunteer will call and let you know.
Network funding
The Corporate Angel Network is a public charity. It is supported solely by donations. Aside from corporate airline seats, they welcome cash contributions in any amount. They are also in need of related gifts, including:
- Commercial airline tickets and unused frequent flyer miles. These are used when transportation cannot be found, or when there are no corporate sponsors in the area.
- Discounted or free lodging in the city of treatment.
- Discounted or free ground transportation in the city of treatment.
To donate to the Corporate Angel Network, visit their Web site at corpangelnetwork.com or call (914) 328-1313.
