Medical Complications of Eating Disorders

Anorexia nervosa
  • Drowsiness, lethargy
  • Swollen joints
  • Cessation of menstrual period
  • Malnutrition
  • Lowering of inner body temperature and blood pressure
  • Severe bowel abnormalities
  • Dehydration
  • Heart palpitations
  • Heart attack
  • Brain starvation, causing disorganized thinking
Bulimia nervosa
  • Damage to throat and esophagus
  • Dehydration
  • Damage to bowels, liver and kidney
  • Electrolyte imbalance, which can lead to cardiac arrest
Binge eating disorder
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Gall bladder disease
  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Certain types of cancer
