Snoozing at Work

It's one of those afternoons. Your eyelids are so heavy. You would give anything to lay your head down on your desk and catch a few ZZZ's.

Wake up! People who are tired at work are less productive and are more likely to make costly mistakes.

Try these tips for staying awake at work.

  • First and foremost, get enough sleep. If it means going to bed earlier than usual, do so.
  • If you feel sleepy, stand up and stretch.
  • During lunch, go for a walk with a co-worker. It will help wake you up and reinvigorate you. If the weather is bad, climb the stairs for 10 minutes or walk the halls.
  • Eat healthy and regularly throughout your day.
  • Don't leave tedious assignments for the afternoon or end of the day. This might make you feel even more tired and consequently more likely to make mistakes.
  • Don't drink caffeine too late in the day. It will interfere with the quality of your sleep, creating a cycle.
  • Make sure your workspace is well lit. Good lighting helps the body know it's time to be alert. If you don't have enough light, get a small lamp.
  • Carpool with others. Driving can take a lot of energy out of you.
  • If you are having problems sleeping and these problems are interfering with your quality of life, see a doctor. It could be a sign of a serious medical condition such as depression or sleep apnea (where you stop breathing during your sleep).
