Stretching for Your Health

What do you do first thing in the morning? You probably yawn and do some kind of stretch. You may not even know that you're stretching. Whether it's a gradual lifting of your arms overhead or a subtle arching of your back, your morning stretch probably accompanies your first step out of bed and comes naturally to you. Stretching is also a necessary part of a full exercise routine.

Benefits of stretching
According to the American Council on Exercise, stretching has the following benefits:

  • Increases flexibility
  • Improves posture
  • Relieves tense muscles
  • Reduces the risk of injury when done after a short warm up

Warm up first
Exercise experts claim that stretching may not really help prevent injuries unless you warm up first. Before you stretch, warm up by walking for 5 to 10 minutes with arms swinging from side to side, or jog in place.

Stretch every day
Try to make some kind of stretching routine part of your overall fitness program. The three most important parts of fitness are cardiovascular exercise (like running or swimming), strength training and stretching.

Stretching tips

  • Take it slow. Slowly and gently stretch the muscle.
  • Breathe. Inhale slowly as you begin the stretch. Exhale as you complete the stretch. Don't hold your breath.
  • Stretch until you feel tension. Don't push too far. If you feel pain, ease off.
